Job Overview
We are seeking a Hardware Systems Engineer to support the integration of sensors and hardware onto unmanned aerial system (UAS) platforms. This role combines systems engineering, mechanical design, hardware validation, flight testing, and technical documentation. The ideal candidate will have experience with CAD, hardware integration, troubleshooting, and UAS-related technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Design mechanical components related to sensors and hardware systems.
- Plan and execute sensor and hardware integrations for new UAS platforms.
- Maintain existing hardware and sensor integrations.
- Conduct UAS flight testing activities.
- Design, fabricate, and document wire harnesses.
- Create and maintain engineering, production, and user-facing documentation.
- Provide Level 2 engineering support.
- Perform hardware and software compatibility testing with UAS platforms and third-party software.
- Create and maintain engineering drawings and bills of materials.
- Facilitate documentation change management between engineering and production teams.
- Act as a liaison between engineering teams and technology partners.
- Support product improvement and sustainment initiatives.
- Develop subject matter expertise on hardware systems and their applications.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
- Minimum one year of CAD experience; PTC Creo preferred.
- Ability to obtain FAA Part 107 certification within three months of employment.
- Experience with Pixhawk autopilots (PX4 and Ardupilot).
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to independently interpret technical requirements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Self-motivated and able to work effectively within a team environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with UAS (drone) platforms.
- Experience with MAVLink-based systems.
Preferred Background
- Familiarity with Pixhawk autopilot hardware.
- Knowledge of PX4 and Ardupilot flight stack firmware.
- Exposure to MAVLink-based systems.
- Interest in learning new hardware technologies and integration processes.
- Ability to understand and support compatibility between hardware products and UAS platforms.
Work Environment
- Approximately 25% of the workday spent on feet.
- Must be able to lift up to 55 lbs.
- Business casual dress code.
Travel Requirements
- Travel using a personal vehicle may be required, potentially as often as weekly depending on business needs.
- Additional travel may be required for testing and validation activities.
