Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced AS400 RPG Programmer Analyst to support and enhance the Alabama Department of Public Health’s Vital Statistics System. This role is responsible for maintaining business-critical applications within an IBM AS400 environment, developing new functionality, troubleshooting production issues, and collaborating with technical and business stakeholders to ensure system reliability and performance.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with RPG development on the IBM AS400 platform, strong production support skills, and a proven track record of maintaining and enhancing legacy enterprise applications.
Required Qualifications

8+ years of verifiable RPG programming experience

Experience developing and supporting applications in an IBM AS400 environment

Relevant AS400/RPG experience within the past 12–15 years

Experience supporting business-critical enterprise applications

Eligible for Alabama State Merit System employment

Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Key Responsibilities

Maintain, support, and enhance the ADPH Vital Statistics System.

Design, develop, test, and implement RPG-based application enhancements.

Analyze business and technical requirements and translate them into effective solutions.

Troubleshoot and resolve production issues in a timely manner.

Perform system testing, validation, and quality assurance activities.

Create and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and support materials.

Collaborate with business users, project teams, and technical stakeholders.

Participate in enterprise reporting and metrics initiatives.

Support system maintenance, upgrades, and ongoing operational improvements.

Ensure application stability, performance, and data integrity.
Ideal Candidate

8+ years of hands-on AS400/RPG development experience.

Strong background in RPG/400, RPGLE, ILE RPG, and SQL RPGLE.

Extensive experience supporting legacy enterprise systems.

Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex production issues.

Experience with AS400 administration and system upgrades is highly desirable.

Strong documentation, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Comfortable working in a highly independent, mission-critical support environment.
