Compliance Specialist V
Location: Sunnyvale, CA
Work Arrangement: Onsite, with occasional travel required
Work Duration: W2 Contract, 12 months
Pay: $96-98/hr
About the Role
We’re seeking a highly skilled Compliance Specialist V to join our Global EHS team. This role is critical in ensuring safe practices around laser and radiation sources in research and product environments. You’ll lead lab inspections, evaluate equipment and experiments, perform exposure calculations, and implement safety protocols across multiple sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct lab audits for laser and radiation safety compliance
- Analyze hazards and support hardware safety specifications (lasers, LEDs, X-ray)
- Apply standards such as FLPPS, ANSI Z136.1, IEC 60825, IEC 62471
- Develop and approve SOPs related to laser and optical hazards
- Review work by external laser service technicians
- Perform laser and LED power, spectral, and temporal measurements
- Implement CDPH safety protocols for X-ray generators
- Simulate faults and validate optical safety of equipment
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance
- Travel to labs in Sunnyvale, Burlingame, Fremont, and occasionally Redmond, WA
- Support additional EHS programs (LOTO, chemical/electrical safety, machine guarding, etc.)
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Optical Sciences, Engineering, Health Physics, or related field
(Direct LSO/RSO experience may substitute for degree) - Experience in safety investigations and failure analysis
- Familiarity with lasers, LEDs, and X-ray generating machines
- Technical background in field testing or reliability engineering
- Knowledge of ANSI Z136.1 and other safety standards
- Strong communication and documentation skills
- Self-motivated and adaptable in dynamic environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) or Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)
- Experience in hardware research or production environments
- Proficiency in laser safety calculations (MPE, NOHD, NHZ)
- Familiarity with FDA/CDRH FLPPS, IEC 60825-1, IEC 62471-1
- Experience with federal safety reporting and compliance
- Knowledge of RF/EMF safety (FCC, IEEE C95.1) and ultrasound safety
- Experience conducting FMEA and Fault Tree Analysis
