Epitec is seeking a Lead Backend Engineer to join the team behind BigFuture, College Board's platform that helps millions of students explore college, careers, and scholarships.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role for an engineer who enjoys architecting solutions, mentoring teammates, and building scalable cloud-native applications.
What You'll Do
• Lead design and development of scalable backend solutions in AWS.
• Build and enhance student-facing products used by millions of users.
• Partner with product owners, architects, and designers to deliver innovative solutions.
• Develop modern applications using Node.js, TypeScript, AWS, and React.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, architecture discussions, and technical coaching.
• Drive engineering best practices, CI/CD, observability, and operational excellence.
• Help shape and implement Generative AI solutions and engineering standards.
Required Skills
- 7+ years building scalable web applications in AWS environments.
- 3+ years of Node.js development using TypeScript.
- Strong AWS experience including Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, SNS, SQS, API Gateway, CloudWatch, IAM, and related services.
- Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redshift, DynamoDB, or other databases.
- Generative AI experience such as RAG solutions, LLM-powered applications, chatbot implementations, or model fine-tuning.
- Experience with event-driven architectures and asynchronous programming.
- Strong leadership, mentoring, and technical architecture experience.
Nice to Have
• React.js experience.
• OpenSearch/Elasticsearch experience.
• Experience building highly scalable education, SaaS, or consumer-facing platforms.
