Mechanical Designer
Location: Southfield, MI 48033
Work Schedule: Hybrid, 4 days onsite
Pay Range: $34-39/hour, depending on chosen benefits
Position Summary:
This role focuses on the mechanical design and coordination of weld guns for Body-in-White (BIW) tooling fixtures. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in weld gun development, supplier coordination, and a strong understanding of automotive body assembly systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with Project Engineers to track and report weld gun development progress.
- Apply company standards and customer specifications (corporate and plant level) to all mechanical designs.
- Design and select weld guns from a predefined library based on metal stack-ups and weld pressure requirements.
- Coordinate with Mechanical Design and Robot Simulation teams to ensure feasibility and alignment with process intent.
- Analyze engineering changes and communicate updates to the Project Engineer.
- Maintain and update spreadsheets/matrices tracking gun numbers, spot numbers, stack-ups, and approval timelines.
- Attend customer meetings and review product sections to validate weld gun compatibility across locations.
- Package weld guns for customer approval and ensure timely supplier delivery.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of experience in weld gun design and coordination.
- Strong CAD skills (NX preferred) and familiarity with NAAMS standards and North American OEM specifications.
- Deep understanding of BIW tooling fixtures, geometry setting, and fixture stack-up methodology.
- Experience working with suppliers to design and develop weld guns and end-of-arm tooling.
- Ability to read and create schematic, orthographic, and angle views for component relationships.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and CAD platforms.
- Knowledge of fastening technologies including MIG, TIG, arc welding, laser welding, riveting, screwing, adhesives, and sealers.
- Ability to compute mathematical formulas for component specifications using CAD tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ years of mechanical design experience in powertrain or BIW tooling.
- Associate’s degree in Mechanical Technology or equivalent experience.
- Familiarity with GEO and Robot Systems functionality.
- Understanding of mechanical design sequences and controls documentation.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues and revise designs to reduce production problems.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (5–20%) for project support.
