Mechanical Engineer I
Location: Decatur, IL – onsite role
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM (Potential overtime)
Job Type: W2 Contract, 24 months, potential to extend
Pay Rate: $24 – 29/hourly with optional benefits packages including PTO, medical insurance, and 401k
Job Summary
The Mechanical Engineer I will research and investigate the design, functionality, and maintenance of mechanical products, equipment, systems, and processes. This role requires the ability to create engineering drawings and interpret blueprints.
Responsibilities
- Research, design, develop, manufacture, and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical devices
- Analyze customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine time and cost feasibility
- Assist drafters in developing structural designs using tools, equipment, or software
- Maintain close interaction with assembly areas to communicate engineering issues during manufacturing and assembly
- Address Assembly Quality Events (AQE), Built-In Quality (BIQ) issues, and Continuous Improvement (CI) cards
- Collaborate with Operations, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to resolve engineering issues
- Update machine-level prints (paint/lube, general arrangement, test instructions) and bill of materials (BOM)
- Attend shop floor Voice of Customer (VOC) meetings
- Support prototype and pilot machine builds for New Product Introduction (NPI)
- Create and obtain authorization for deviations to resolve design issues
- Perform pre-delivery audits (PDA) of finished assemblies, including issue marking, static torque checks, and reporting
Typical Day
- Respond to shop floor issues and AQEs
- Collaborate with section managers, auditors, assemblers, and engineers
- Communicate frequently with design teams via email, chat, and meetings
- Participate in weekly AQE, BIQ, and warranty review meetings
- Split time between office and factory (50/50)
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 0–2 years of experience
- OR Associate’s degree with 3–5 years of experience
Technical Skills – Required
- 0–2 years of experience (including projects/internships)
- Basic understanding of machine assembly/processing
- Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Technical Skills – Desired
- Experience with machine or process design
- Engineering coordination experience
- Familiarity with VisView, TeamCenter
- Exposure to PRWB, Tableau, Decatur Web Apps, MES, AQE, ETQ Reliance Portal, CPI-BIQ, I-Cubed, CI processes, Parts Discovery Tool
