Job Description:
The main function of a mechanical engineer is to research and investigate the design, functionality and maintenance of mechanical products, equipment, systems and processes. A typical mechanical engineer has the ability to make engineering drawings, and read and interpret blueprints.
Job Responsibilities:
- Create and use Finite Element Analysis models either individually or in collaboration with supplier firm
- Log quality issues and arrange for corrections to models
- Perform model setup, submit jobs to high-performance computing cluster
- Perform simulations of static, modal, and dynamic simulations
- Develop understanding of design mechanical capacity for strength and fatigue
- Author reports containing assumptions, models and results
- Draw conclusions and make recommendations to design, simulation, and validation partners
- Contribute to and participate in peer reviews
- Contribute to improvements in simulation methods and processes

Position’s Contributions to Work Group:
- The Engine Components and Thermal Systems (ECTS) structural analysis team of Large Power Systems Division (LPSD) is seeking a structural analyst. The team supports New Product Introduction (NPI) and Current Product Improvement (CPI) activities for cooling and aftertreatment components and systems. The analyses the team performs can be very challenging, involving complex phenomena such as engine and machine vibration and forced response, material nonlinearities, exotic materials and complex geometries.
Typical task breakdown:
- Perform structural system analysis and simulation for structural integrity, response, performance, and service life of aftertreatment and/or cooling components and systems
- Provide product design and development teams with timely conclusions and best actionable recommendations and solutions
- Work to continuously improve the accuracy of analysis processes and tools Required Skills /Qualifications (skills or background required to do the job)
Education & Experience Required:
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or Related Engineering Field plus 5-7
- MS similarly plus 2-4
- PhD similarly plus 1-2
- Industrial experience in structural analysis, preferably with a focus on static and/or dynamic analysis
Technical Skills
- Understanding of dynamics, material properties and fatigue
- Experience with structural simulations for static, vibration, transient dynamic, boundary and material nonlinear, fracture and fatigue life, bolted joint, and welded structures
- Experience with ABAQUS and Hypermesh
- Experience in machine dynamic simulation
- Experiences in nonmetallic structural simulation, user defined material behavior modeling, and component interaction modeling
- Experiences in machine and structural design and validation
- Pro/E skills sufficient for FE model preparation
Soft Skills
- Clear verbal and written communication skills
