Data Center Operations Technician

Role Overview

This role is responsible for day?to?day data center operations, including incident response, onsite system support, asset management, and infrastructure coordination. The technician supports Layer 1 infrastructure, critical facility systems, and cross?functional operational workflows while collaborating with internal teams and external vendors.

Key Responsibilities

Data Center Operations & Incident Support (40%)

  • Monitor and respond to onsite issues and incidents
  • Troubleshoot data center infrastructure and operational issues
  • Perform shift turnover and monitor incident queues
  • Process media and escort vendors
  • Configure and troubleshoot onsite IoT devices, including electronic door locks, intelligent power strips, and building automation systems (BAS)

Change Management & Coordination (20%)

  • Partner with Product Owners and Subject Matter Experts to review and validate onsite data center requirements
  • Support system installs, decommissions, reconfigurations, and onsite power downs
  • Schedule and coordinate change tickets and ensure smooth shift handoffs

Asset & Inventory Management (20%)

  • Manage RMA processes and small?parts inventory
  • Support asset reconciliation activities within the data center
  • Handle shipping and receiving of new, return, and salvage hardware
  • Maintain cable inventory to established thresholds
  • Review lifecycle and redeployment potential of stockroom hardware

Infrastructure Knowledge & Impact Assessment (10%)

  • Identify core data center components and OSI Model Layer 1 infrastructure
  • Understand how hardware or software changes impact onsite data center services
  • Apply knowledge of facilities, power, cooling, and physical security systems

Process Improvement & Collaboration (10%)

  • Review and improve team documentation and operational processes
  • Participate in agile ceremonies, demos, and presentations
  • Support onboarding and knowledge sharing for new team members
  • Engage in technology and operations communities

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in IT Computer Operations, IT Customer Service, or related fields
  • 1–2+ years of experience supporting complex data center environments
  • General understanding of indoor and outdoor cable plants, including copper and fiber (short?range and long?range)
  • Working knowledge of IT infrastructure components (LAN, WAN, SAN, firewalls, servers, storage, wireless, DAS)
  • Strong documentation skills with attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external vendors
  • Self?starter with a team?first mindset
  • High School Diploma or GED

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related field
  • Data center and/or networking certifications
  • 3–5+ years of experience designing, deploying, or maintaining complex data center environments (new builds, expansions, or major renovations)
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as EIA/TIA, IEEE, NEC, and ISO
  • Experience supporting structured cabling systems and enterprise infrastructure
