Location: Full Remote (Grand Rapids, MI)

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Payroll Operations Manager to lead, plan, administer, and oversee the activities of a payroll operations team within a complex, centralized payroll environment. This leader will be responsible for timely and accurate payroll processing, tax reporting, operational excellence, continuous improvement, and ensuring compliance with company policies and federal, state, and local regulations.
Essential Functions
- Lead and develop a payroll operations team while performing full management responsibilities, including budgeting, hiring, performance reviews, work coordination/scheduling, salary recommendations, employee development, leadership, grievance resolution, coaching, counseling, and consistently modeling core values.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge and ensure compliance with governmental regulations and requirements for payroll wage/hour rules, garnishments, deductions, benefits, retirement, fringe benefits, time off, and related compliance. Monitor trends/best practices, make recommendations, and apply enhancements to maintain payroll integrity.
- Provide operational supervision of payroll processing, ensuring accurate and timely payroll execution. Hold the team accountable for excellent customer service and resolve escalations as needed.
- Ensure accurate and timely filing of tax returns and reporting requirements, including state wage detail reporting, new hire reporting, and W-2 preparation, while meeting all deadlines.
- Implement, document, and continuously improve payroll processes (document retention, manual checks, overpayments, manual deductions, gross pay calculations, deferred compensation, garnishments, levies, child support, relocation, etc.) and act as a champion of change.
- Evaluate and improve audit readiness, disaster recovery, and record retention processes and procedures.
- Establish an annual payroll plan (including year-end activities) in collaboration with Finance, HRIS, IS, and other key stakeholders. Act as a consultant internally and externally (including audits and legal counsel).
- Evaluate and audit payroll program specifications within payroll technology systems.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Business Administration, Human Resources, Accounting, or related field
- 7+ years of direct payroll experience
- 3+ years of supervisory/people leadership experience
- 3+ years in a fully automated time & attendance / payroll environment within a large, multi-site organization
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ year experience with Workday, ServiceNow, and APIs
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred
