Job Description:
We are seeking a Transmission Systems Engineer to support the development, integration, and continuous improvement of 10-speed rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and hybrid transmission systems.
This engineer will take ownership of transmission warranty and field-quality issues, analyze warranty trends, investigate vehicle concerns, and lead root-cause resolution efforts. The position works closely with component and design-release engineers, calibration teams, manufacturing plants, suppliers, service organizations, and dealerships to improve product quality, reduce warranty costs, and enhance customer experience.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on problem solver and self-starter with experience in transmissions, powertrain systems, vehicle calibration, or hybrid/electrified propulsion.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a Product Development Engineer supporting 10-speed RWD transmission and propulsion systems and their integration into vehicle applications.
- Take ownership of transmission system and component warranty concerns from initial identification through final resolution.
- Analyze warranty data and field trends to identify recurring transmission and powertrain issues.
- Lead root-cause investigations involving vehicle, transmission, and component-level concerns.
- Perform or support hands-on vehicle testing, troubleshooting, data collection, and hardware evaluation.
- Work closely with transmission component engineers and design-release engineers to develop corrective actions.
- Collaborate with calibration teams to collect and analyze vehicle and transmission performance data.
- Partner with powertrain manufacturing and vehicle assembly plants to implement manufacturing-related improvements.
- Support service teams and dealerships with investigation and resolution of field concerns.
- Work with suppliers to resolve component quality and performance issues.
- Drive improvements in quality, reliability, warranty cost, and customer satisfaction.
- Document findings, communicate technical issues, and follow corrective actions through completion.
- Support hybrid and electrified propulsion applications including e-motor, FHEV, and PHEV systems.
- Travel to manufacturing plants, suppliers, or other engineering locations as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Knowledge or experience with automotive transmissions or powertrain systems.
- Understanding vehicle calibration and vehicle data collection/analysis.
- Strong hands-on troubleshooting and root-cause analysis capabilities.
- Ability to independently investigate technical problems and drive them toward resolution.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, service teams, and other cross-functional organizations.
- Self-motivated with a continuous improvement and problem-solving mindset.
- Ability to work onsite in Livonia, MI at least 4 days per week, with additional onsite time depending on testing and hardware needs.
- Ability to support short-term domestic and international travel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with 10-speed automatic transmissions or RWD transmission systems.
- Transmission development, systems engineering, integration, or design-release experience.
- Automotive powertrain development experience.
- Experience with vehicle calibration/data-acquisition tools such as ATI or similar calibration tools.
- Experience investigating warranty, field-quality, or customer-reported vehicle issues.
- Experience with hybrid/electrified propulsion systems, including:
- HEV/FHEV
- PHEV
- E-motors
- Hybrid transmissions
- Electrified powertrain systems
- Automotive design and release engineering experience.
- Experience working directly with powertrain manufacturing or vehicle assembly plants.
- Supplier management and component-quality resolution experience.
