Job Description:
This is a senior-level Mainframe Systems Engineering role responsible for the design, operation, maintenance, and optimization of enterprise z/OS infrastructure supporting critical business operations. The position focuses on mainframe system programming, infrastructure engineering, capacity planning, software installation and support, disaster recovery, performance monitoring, security administration, and troubleshooting complex z/OS environments. The ideal candidate brings extensive experience with z/OS internals, ISV products, system customization, Assembler programming, and 24×7 support of mission-critical mainframe environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Involved in the design, operation, and maintenance of enterprise servers, including specialty mainframe systems like IBM/LPARS, high performance super computing systems, and general-purpose hybrid and cloud systems, for optimal end-user business operations.
- Research, design, implement and maintain complex infrastructure solutions for internal customer needs such as specialty software, data warehouses, identity access management, event frameworks, containerization and on demand scaling.
- Design and configure secure virtualized environments aligned with enterprise architecture blueprints consisting of virtual machines, virtual networks, high speed and distributed storage systems (SAN, HDFS, SSD, etc.).
- Utilize existing tools or assist in engineering custom monitoring solutions to ensure systems are configured correctly, run efficiently and remain secure against potential threats.
- Monitor and review resources like CPU, memory, storage, and network traffic to ensure effective utilization aligned with expected parameters and to safeguard against runaway costs.
- Resolve bottlenecks and plan for future capacity needs based on resource usage trends.
- Advise enterprise architecture teams on usage trends to incorporate into future blueprints.
- Install, customize, test, implement, document, and support Independent Software Vendor (ISV) products, including user modifications required for release levels or site-specific requirements.
- Work directly with software vendors to resolve product issues and support requests.
- Code in Assembler to develop, test, implement, document, and support system modifications and MVS and JES exits.
- Analyze, debug, and correct z/OS software problems.
- Support z/OS Unix System Services (USS) and WebSphere environments.
- Use IBM ServiceLink and interface with IBM technical support to resolve z/OS software and hardware problems.
- Create and analyze RACF profiles and support security administration activities.
- Provide system programming support for the installation and upgrade of mainframe hardware configurations.
- Support Disaster Recovery planning, testing, and recovery activities for the z/OS environment.
- Provide customer support by addressing software and hardware trouble tickets and delivering Level 1, 2, and 3 support.
- Participate in off-hours, weekend, holiday, and rotational 24×7 on-call support for software and infrastructure issues.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
