Position: Senior Backend Software Development Engineer
Location: Dearborn, MI (Hybrid)
Employment Type: Full-Time Contract
Pay: $56-59 per hour
Description: We are seeking a Senior Backend Software Development Engineer to design, build, and operate high-throughput backend systems that ingest, process, and serve large volumes of connected vehicle telematics data. The role focuses on scalable distributed systems, data engineering, cloud development, and API design to support fleet intelligence products used by commercial and enterprise customers.
Responsibilities:
- Design and develop scalable backend services and APIs for GPS data, trip events, driver behavior, vehicle diagnostics, and sensor telemetry.
- Build and maintain real-time and batch data pipelines that ingest high-volume vehicle event streams from Kafka, Pub/Sub, and similar messaging systems.
- Develop cloud-native applications and microservices on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- Design, manage, and optimize data warehouse solutions and large-scale data models.
- Develop and support RESTful and gRPC APIs, including authentication, integration, and versioning.
- Implement CI/CD pipelines, containerized deployments, and cloud infrastructure best practices.
- Optimize system reliability, scalability, database performance, API latency, and observability.
- Support AI/ML-driven solutions and fleet intelligence use cases.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams and provide technical leadership and mentorship.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 7+ years of IT experience and 5+ years in development
- Practical experience in two programming languages, or advanced expertise in one programming language.
- GCP – Experience deploying and managing services on Google Cloud Platform, including Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, IAM, and Cloud Functions.
- Big Data – Experience working with large-scale data processing frameworks such as Apache Spark, Dataflow, or BigQuery.
- Data Warehousing – Experience designing and maintaining data warehouse solutions (e.g., BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift).
- Artificial Intelligence & Expert Systems – Experience developing or integrating AI/ML models and rule-based expert systems.
- API – Experience designing, building, and consuming RESTful or gRPC APIs.
Preferred:
- Google Cloud Platform – Familiarity with advanced GCP services beyond core compute and storage, such as Vertex AI, Dataflow, Cloud Composer (Airflow), and BigQuery ML.
- Languages: Kotlin, Java, Python, or equivalent JVM/backend language
- Frameworks: Spring Boot, gRPC, REST API design
- Data: BigQuery, PostgreSQL, Redis, Bigtable, Kafka or Pub/Sub
- Infrastructure: GCP (or equivalent), Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines
- Practices: TDD, MLOps-adjacent data pipeline patterns, database performance tuning, API versioning
