Controls Engineer
Overview
Seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to support plant engineering and production operations within an automotive manufacturing environment. This role focuses on PLC programming, controls system design, automation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement to reduce downtime and improve process efficiency.

- Location: Lansing MI (onsite)
- Shift Time: 2nd shift, 2:30PM – 11PM
- Pay Rate: $85,000 – 102,000 with benefits and bonus eligibility
Responsibilities
- Support production by troubleshooting and reducing equipment and tooling downtime and scrap
- Design, program, simulate, test, and support startup of industrial controls systems
- Program automated equipment to meet production and process requirements
- Support automation and process improvements to drive operational efficiency
- Design and quote electronic controls required for manufacturing processes
- Review vendor quotes and recommend controls devices and suppliers
- Maintain and support plant process controls equipment
- Develop plant and process improvements (layout, equipment, ergonomics)
- Identify critical process controls and ensure appropriate maintenance resources
- Provide technical guidance and support to Maintenance Technicians
- Ensure compliance with all safety and environmental standards
- Document activities and follow engineering change and change?control processes
- Participate in commissioning, startup, and field support activities
- Perform additional duties as required by management
Required / Preferred Qualifications
Required
- 4–7 years of Controls Engineering experience in manufacturing or assembly environments
- PLC programming experience with one or more of the following:
- Allen Bradley, Siemens, Modicon, GE Fanuc, Mitsubishi, Omron, AutomationDirect, Toshiba
- HMI / SCADA programming experience (e.g., RSView, Wonderware, Rockwell, GE Cimplicity, Siemens)
- Strong PLC logic and troubleshooting skills
- Solid mechanical and electrical aptitude
- Experience with:
- ControlNet and DeviceNet I/O systems
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
- Conveyor systems
- Industrial controls (photo eyes, MCCs, barcode readers, etc.)
- Field commissioning and startup
- Panel design experience, wiring schematics, and blueprint reading
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel approximately 20%
Preferred
- AutoCAD experience
- Experience supporting automation, process improvement, or CI initiatives
- Leadership or mentoring experience in a plant environment
