Instructional Systems Designer

Joint Apprentice Program

Overview

The Instructional Systems Designer is responsible for designing and developing technically accurate, instructionally sound training materials to support a performance-based apprenticeship program. This role partners closely with program leadership and subject matter experts to ensure training solutions align with program goals and workforce competency needs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead instructional design projects, including planning tasks and coordinating with subject matter experts and program leadership
  • Conduct needs assessments and front-end analyses to determine performance and training needs
  • Assess learner audience characteristics and perform job, task, and content analyses
  • Define instructional strategies, including writing and sequencing performance and behavioral objectives
  • Develop learning assessments and instructional materials; customize existing content as needed
  • Evaluate training effectiveness and instructional delivery methods
  • Ensure application of sound instructional design principles across all training materials
  • Conduct research using focus groups, interviews, literature reviews, and online resources
  • Analyze course evaluations and testing data; prepare reports to support data-driven decision-making
  • Collaborate with instructional designers, subject matter experts, and program staff to meet program goals
  • Evaluate instructor content delivery and classroom management; provide feedback in partnership with program leadership
  • Maintain training material inventory, including preparation and printing of materials
  • Develop and maintain processes, procedures, templates, and standards for instructional consistency
  • Review post-secondary course content for alignment with skilled trade curricula and program objectives
  • Promote best practices in instructional design across the program

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Communication, Education, or a related field OR equivalent professional experience
  • Strong knowledge of instructional design methodologies and adult learning theory
  • Strong writing and instructional material design skills (digital and print)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting apprenticeship, workforce development, or skilled trades training programs
  • Experience evaluating instructor performance and training delivery effectiveness
  • Background working in collaborative, cross-functional training environments
