Position Overview
We are seeking a Web Accessibility Consultant to support the creation, remediation, testing, and maintenance of accessible electronic documents and forms intended for publication and distribution. The consultant will collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure electronic documents comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 and 2.2 Level AA standards, PDF/UA requirements, and established digital accessibility best practices.
This individual will be responsible for improving the accessibility and semantic structure of official documents while preserving content accuracy, meaning, terminology, compliance requirements, and organizational intent.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and remediate policy documents, procedural documentation, fillable forms, and other electronic documents for accessibility compliance.
- Create accessible Microsoft Word source documents and convert them to accessible PDF formats.
- Remediate existing PDF documents to meet WCAG 2.1, WCAG 2.2 Level AA, and PDF/UA standards.
- Create and remediate accessible electronic forms, ensuring proper form fields, labels, instructions, grouping, tab order, and keyboard navigation.
- Conduct automated and manual accessibility testing, including reviews of document structure, reading order, forms, tables, links, images, and navigation.
- Perform quality assurance reviews of remediated documents before publication.
- Assist with the development and enhancement of accessible Word and form templates.
- Identify recurring accessibility issues and recommend solutions to improve document accessibility and reduce future remediation efforts.
Required Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of WCAG 2.1 and WCAG 2.2 Level AA requirements as they apply to electronic documents.
- Experience with PDF/UA standards, accessible PDF structure, and PDF tagging.
- Advanced Microsoft Word accessibility experience, including:
- Styles
- Headings
- Lists
- Tables
- Hyperlinks
- Images
- Document Properties
- Accessible PDF conversion
- Experience using Adobe Acrobat Pro for accessibility remediation, including:
- Tags
- Reading Order
- Tables
- Links
- Figures
- Document Properties
- Form Fields
- Experience creating and remediating accessible fillable PDF forms.
- Knowledge of:
- Logical document structure
- Heading hierarchy
- Reading order
- Document navigation
- Ability to create meaningful hyperlink text and appropriate alternative text.
- Experience identifying decorative images and content that should be hidden from assistive technologies.
- Experience remediating complex tables and restructuring information into more accessible formats when appropriate.
- Experience using automated accessibility validation and testing tools.
- Experience performing manual accessibility testing.
